The museum tells the story of Chesterfield from its origin as a Roman fort to the present day. It is located in the Stephenson Memorial Hall, built in 1879 as a mechanics institute, and named in honor of the town’s most famous Victorian resident, railway pioneer George Stephenson. The museum opened in 1994 and is the first public museum in the town – a surprising fact considering Chesterfield’s long and important history as a midlands market town and industrial centre. The museum stands in the shadow of the famous ‘Crooked Spire’ of St Mary and All Saints and is a short walk from Chesterfield’s excellent open market, one of the largest in the country.
Due to the age of the building there were obvious access issues to the upper floor, as floor space was limited it was necessary to use a platform stair lift, Due to reliability issues with the existing stair lift Ability Lifts of Sheffield were recommended to provide a replacement.
The Optimum 200 is one of the best quality stair platform lifts available suitable for both internal and external use the unit is supplied with a platform compatible with Part M of the Building Regulations. The unit is probably the slimmest unit on the market, is aesthetically pleasing and very reliable.
The unit has been designed to transport the occupant in comfort along a straight or curved path. This particular installation benefited from the addition of a fold down seat and an extended travel rail that doubles as a handrail when the lift is not in use.
