Dating back over 600 years King’s Manor is one of historic York’s most attractive and unusual buildings and is enjoying both a physical and intellectual renaissance.
Part of York University, this Grade One listed building is the home to world renowned and innovative teaching and research that includes archaeology, heritage and medieval studies departments.
Originally built as the Abbot’s house of St Mary’s, the King’s Manor has served as a seat of government, a residence, a school and the teaching and research facility that it is today. The history of King’s Manor therefore weaves a thread of history through York since medieval times.
Open to both students and general public the cafe area is sited within the seventeenth century refectory and is split over two levels and access for the less able needed to be provided adjacent to the three steps.
Ability Lifts Ltd, the Sheffield based platform lift specialist, was selected to provide the solution with the installation of the Optimum 350 short rise vertical platform lift.
As often happens, contemporary design blends well with ancient architecture and Optimum 350 was no exception, sitting neatly upon an existing parquet floor above a vaulted ceiling. A simple two day installation thus providing both wheelchair and tea trolley access over this split level site.
Ability Lifts General Manager Nick Bates commented ‘this was an interesting challenge as we had to be sympathetic to the building’s grade one listing and at the same time ensure that we provided a safe solution that suited the building’s unique heritage’.
